THIS RANT 08/08/97
Rant Of The Day is where I get to mouth off about whatever I feel like for however long I like. Theoretically, I'll update my whinge/opinion piece every weekday; in practice, maybe not so often. |
For any regular reader of magazines, the words 'Franklin Mint' are bound to raise a smile. I still bitterly regret not buying the McDonald's Limited Edition collector plate when it was available for just one easy payment of $39.50. (Mind you, I also regret not owning a vinyl copy of Sesame Street Fever, so you may not want to take me too seriously.)So I'm having to think seriously about another $39.50 opportunity. In what must have been the ultimate case of "take the money and laugh yourself stupid", Simpsons creator Matt Groening has authorised a collector plate, featuring Springfield's most famous residents. However, I doubt he authorised the treacly copy which advertises the plate, and includes these immortal words:
Homer, Marge, Lisa, Maggie and the irrepressible Bart. We love them all! Because -- more often than we'd like to admit -- we all have a little Simpson inside of us!
Despite this trickling into celebrity, however, Franklin Mint is still pursuing the serious business of bringing C-grade gilt tack by award-winning artists into our homes. Take, for instance, the Irish Blessing Plate, the "first-ever shamrock-shaped heirloom collector plate" created by "award-winning nature artist Hilary Scoffield".
While I'm curious to know what award exactly Ms Scoffield won, the Web hasn't helped me much. It has, however, informed me that there is a Franklin Mint museum in Philadelphia, so I suppose I should be thankful for small mercies.
