Rant Of The Day is where I get to mouth off about whatever I feel like for however long I like. Theoretically, I'll update my whinge/opinion piece every weekday; in practice, maybe not so often.

The New Weekly gets less tasteful

The New Weekly has never been reknowned for taking a delicate approach to the problems of the world (or, more specifically, the alleged problems of so-called 'celebrities'), but this week it has really excelled itself. If there's one thing I don't need to see at my news vendor every morning, it's the sight of Jean-Claude Van Damme licking his wife's neck. I'm not saying he doesn't have some kind of enshrined constitutional right to lick his wife's neck, but did we need it on the cover of a national magazine? Yuck! This shot has all the taste and charm of an afternoon promo for A Current Affair (although I doubt it would qualify as "a story that no parent can afford to miss").

As you can see from the other coverlines, elsewhere it's business as usual for the magazine. The New Weekly has recently been experimenting with a busier cover layout -- why promo three stories when you can promo six? We're disappointed to note, however, that yet another dodgy X Files allusion is being built into the structure of the magazine with the new 'SeX Files' section. What we really need on the cover of national magazines is more allusions to The Glynn Nicholas Show.
