Single Of The Week is where I review a single I'm particularly enamoured of at the moment. It might be a brand spanking new release, or a classic from decades past that I just feel like going on about.
Last Thing On My Mind
I really wanted to hate this single. 'Last Thing On My Mind' was originally a Bananarama single in 1992, when it essentially flopped miserably annd lay dormant until Pete Waterman (yes, of SAW fame) decided that it could be revived for a new group of his, Steps. The group's first single, '5,6,7,8' was an extremely annoying record, which didn't dispose me well towards them.
Even more annoying, though, was the way they were continuously described as a new ABBA, the kind of lazy music journalism that really pisses me off. Take any line up with two girls and two guys (and Steps actually have three girls) and vaguely catchy pop tunes, and people think it's ABBA. What garbage. Steps don't write their own stuff, are completely manufactured, and don't wear lots of eyeshadow. There's just no comparison.
Having said all that, though, I have to admit that the Steps version of 'Last Thing On My Mind' is actually not that bad, and on the whole probably (gulp!) catchier than the Nanas rendition. (Plus, of course, they stand to make a fair whack on royalties.) The annoying '5,6,7,8' has also been included on the Australian CD single, but it's easy enough to skip it. Certainly it's a hell of a lot better than the cover by Ace Of Base (another band oft-compared to ABBA) of 'Cruel Summer' an even more fabulous Nanas classic that has essentially been butchered.
