Single Of The Week
Single Of The Week is where I review a single I'm particularly enamoured of at the moment. It might be a brand spanking new release, or a classic from decades past that I just feel like going on about.

Given that the Single Of The Week hasn't been updated for over a year, it seems entirely appropriate to resume with a musical act that hasn't had a single out for almost as long: the Spice Girls. While this double-sided number is the first work from ver Girls since 'Goodbye', they've hardly been invisible during the intervening two-year period, what with pregnancies and weddings and divorces and the usual general aura of scandal. Most notably, all four of them have released solo recordings, with mixed degrees of success. It seems fitting that the most successful has been Melanie C, since she's undoubtedly got the best voice.

That said, the core appeal of the Spice Girls (musically speaking) is in the combination of their voices, and this is put to good effect with these two tracks, both produced by US soul ubermeister Rodney Jerkins (he who responsible for the somewhat annoying 'The Boy Is Mine'). While this means slightly more R&B flavoured vocal fills than we've previously had, it's still very much what you'd expect (ie I don't think Posh gets a solo). 'Holler' is definitely the more immediately appealing track, but if you can look past the sloppy lyrics, 'Let Love Lead The Way' is definitely a grower. (And hey, it's nowhere near as annoying as 'Mama'.) I eagerly await the album, Forever, which hits the stores next week.
