Single Of The Week
Single Of The Week is where I review a single I'm particularly enamoured of at the moment. It might be a brand spanking new release, or a classic from decades past that I just feel like going on about.

SELECTED 15/05/01

Chemistry
Semisonic
155 792-2

This is quite possibly the only single I own more or less as the direct result of reading a magazine review. In the April edition of Q (which is my favourite music magazine, as well as my favourite magazine of any kind) Semisonic's album All About Chemistry received a 5-star rating. The mag tends to be pretty sparing with its top accolade (leaving aside perennial favourite acts like Oasis and REM), and it's almost unheard of for that kind of rave to go to a conventional American guitar band without even a whiff of trendiness. Having enjoyed the album's almost title track single, I decided to invest in the record.

While it probably wouldn't rate as a 5-star disc in the Gusworld pantheon, it definitely qualifies as a 4-star effort; catchy, melodic, with lyrics that hit that oh-so-hard-to-reach melding of cynicism, wit and romance. (The track 'Get A Grip' is downright hysterical, actually.)

Anyway, with my interest in the band already piqued, it was a natural extension to purchase the single when I found it in HMV for the cut-down price of $5.95. For that, I get three versions of the track (radio edit, Drumhammer remix and the seemingly obligatory video), as well as the non-album number 'Girlfriend'. It'd be nice to have more different tracks, but at this price, who's got the right to complain!
