Single Of The Week
Single Of The Week is where I review a single I'm particularly enamoured of at the moment. It might be a brand spanking new release, or a classic from decades past that I just feel like going on about.

A lesson that I've been very slow to learn is that when people cover classic pop tunes from my teenage years, my reaction is often to say 'Yuck'. The less said about A1's version of A-ha's classic 'Take On Me', for instance, the better. This is, of course, an age-old process; while I was raving about Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin's 1981 synth cover of 'It's My Party', people of my parents' age were complaining about what a travesty it was.

Sometimes, though, it works. I was quite taken with Marilyn Manson's recent update of 'Tainted Love' (which was, of course, a cover even when Soft Cell did it), although there are more pleasing remakes to be found on the Not Another Teen Movie soundtrack. And I'm also quite taken with 'I Can't Wait', the second single from Ladies First.

'I Can't Wait' is, of course, a cover of the 1986 hit by one-hit wonders Nu Shooz. The original had an insanely catchy hook, which is still all present and correct on this new version. However, with a weird shifting garage drum pattern dominating, much of the melody seems either to be running away from itself or crashing into itself. But that may not be a bad thing, actually. I seriously doubt that I'll ever listen to another Ladies First track again, but this'll do for now.
