Single Of The Week is where I review a single I'm particularly enamoured of at the moment. It might be a brand spanking new release, or a classic from decades past that I just feel like going on about.
I'm not in the habit of going to concerts very much. Partly this is a matter of inclination; I don't like crowds, excess noise or cigarette smoke very much. It also reflects my upbringing in a smallish country city (Armidale) where bands worth seeing were not exactly thick on the ground. I mean, when Tranvision Vamp came to Tamworth (only an hour or two's drive away), that was major, major news. But I still didn't go to see them. These days, I'm still fairly picky, and it had to be a truly important act (say Bananarama or Bjorn Again) to get me out of the house.
Big Pig, who everyone probably remembers as that group with lots of drums and the sister of the girl who used to be in I'm Talking who wasn't Kate Ceberano, were one of the few acts I actually saw in concert while I still lived in Armidale. And they were worth it. Because they had three drum kits on stage, there was a kind of physical intensity about the show that I doubt few bands could duplicate. Plus I got decent seats, and the drinks were cheap.
My appreciation of the concert was also doubtless enhanced by the fact that I loved this single, which I acquired a a few years earlier largely because it came with a free casette single that featured all three of Big Pig's major hits ('Hungry Town', 'Boy Wonder' and 'Breakaway' itself). Back at a time when just getting access to a record player was tricky, this was a definite plus. I've got no idea what happened to Big Pig; but there's an unofficial Web site with everything you could ever want to know, or at least give you all the lyrics for their first album (there was a second, but details escape me completely at the moment).
