Single Of The Week is where I review a single I'm particularly enamoured of at the moment. It might be a brand spanking new release, or a classic from decades past that I just feel like going on about.
Let Me Be Free
Responses to my discussion of Samantha Fox earlier this week have been mixed. One colleague suggested that Sam was a "deformed circus freak". However, the most common question was: "What's she up to these days?" This single is essentially the answer.
Although her last big album was 1989's I Wanna Have Some Fun, Sam has continued plugging away at her musical career. She released two more albums with her original label, Zomba (Just One Night and Greatest Hits) before being unceremoniously dropped. A protracted management wrangle with her father kept her out of the limelight for a few years, until last year when she emerged as the surprise composer for one of Britain's Eurovision contenders, Go For The Heart. Now with a new recording contract (or series of contracts, to be precise), she's released this number.
So what's it like? Pretty much what you'd expect; dancey synth-pop with the usual European connections, and Sam imbibing over the top. Her voice has definitely improved over the years, even if she's reverted to her habit of writhing around with not many clothes on.
