Share A Secret Reviewed

Share A Secret Reviewed looks at the weekly Share A Secret column in Australia's biggest-selling magazine, Woman's Day. We at Gusworld love it, and we hope you will too. We don't give away the plot (that would be unfair and a possible breach of copyright); we just tell you what the headline is and describe the stunning artwork that goes with it.

Woman's Day dated November 18th, 1996

She wanted her hair to be lovely -- I made sure it looked terrible!

Princess Di has a far-reaching influence for a professional clothes-horse. Last week, she appeared in blue in the first dozen or so pages of Woman's Day. This week, the magazine's sections have all had a complete redesign, and blue and other pastel shades figure prominently. They've basically dumped all the column guides and underlines, changed all the colours and gone pale tint crazy.

This change, unfortunately, affects Share A Secret. Gone is the attractive wood panelling background, and the picture is bigger than ever. The really worrying thing is that the headline is half the usual length. How would recent masterpieces have worked in this shrunken format? Sure, 'I SHREDDED MY SISTER'S CLOTHES' shrinks down to 'I SLASHED SIS'S STUFF' and 'I BETRAYED MY VERY BEST FRIEND' goes well as 'I'M A TOTAL BITCH', but what can be done with 'I CAUGHT MUM WITH MY SISTER'S BOYFRIEND'? 'MUM SHAGGED HER MAN' just doesn't have the same ring to it.

The story is also a bit lame, not much of a sex angle and the red is restricted to a peg and a couple of bottle tops. And the protagonist feels guilty, just because she deliberately wrecked her brother-in-law's mistress' hairdo and got an apprentice sacked into the bargain! Personally, we prefer it when the secret sharer is a moral cesspit in every possible sense.
