THIS RANT 12/02/99
Rant Of The Day is where I get to mouth off about whatever I feel like for however long I like. Theoretically, I'll update my whinge/opinion piece every weekday; in practice, maybe not so often. |
Extremely like a virgin
Tribute albums -- where a mixed bag of celebrities get together to record songs by a particular artist -- tend to be decidedly mixed affairs. For one thing, the calibre of the bands featured on them tends to be, well, a bit downscale. I thoroughly enjoyed The Duran Duran Tribute Album, for instance, but I might have heard of three of the bands on it if I was lucky. The same goes for A Song For Eurotrash, ABBA The Tribute and many others.
However, I must admit that Virgin Voices, a forthcoming Madonna tribute album, has piqued my interest. The key reason? Most of the acts performing are well-known popsters of the 80s, and were actually at their peak when Madonna first emerged on the scene. Consider this partial tracklisting:
- Heaven 17 - Holiday
- Loleatta Holloway - Like A Prayer
- Dead Or Alive - Why's It So Hard
- Berlin-Live To Tell
- Information Society - Express Yourself
- Annabella Lwin of Bow Wow Wow-Like A Virgin
- Flock of Seagulls - This Used to Be My Playground
- Missing Person's Dale Bozzio - Into The Groove
This is not entirely surprising, given that Cleopatra Records, which is releasing the two-volume set, has made something of a practice out of signing up 80s bands. This can only be a good thing, and I'll certainly be looking out for the album when it emerges (or more likely, when I can afford it).
