Rant Of The Day THIS RANT 15/06/98

Rant Of The Day is where I get to mouth off about whatever I feel like for however long I like. Theoretically, I'll update my whinge/opinion piece every weekday; in practice, maybe not so often.

Three weeks is a long time in stupidity

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote to the suscribers of the Gusworld mailing list, explaining that I was doing some major cleaning on the site and hence it might not be updated for a while. I haven't actually finished the major cleaning, but after a while the urge to get back and start updating the site simply proved too strong.

It has, of course, been an eventful couple of weeks. Doubtless many readers are expecting a comment on the defection of Ginger Spice, an event treated by the world media with the seriousness it deserves. Certainly, I think it's going to make things difficult for the group; as they proclaim in the much-underrated Spiceworld: The Movie, "We need five for the power of Spice!", and Geri's role in helping manage the band, especially after they sacked their manager Simon Fuller, is well-acknowledged. On the other hand, most music industry pundits predicted that the band wouldn't even manage to get any hits out of their second album (d'oh!), and they're still raking in the money on tour. Time, as ever, will tell. In the meantime, you can improve your Spice Girls IQ by checking out Viva Whatever: The Spice Girls Rare Music Page, a newly-added section of Gusworld.

The other major news event that has been shaping my life is, of course, the Sydney train derailment, which, inevitably, took place on the train line which I use to get to work. On the morning it happened, I was only delayed in getting to work by 15 minutes, but by the afternoon, things were getting a bit hairy. The bus service took nearly an hour to get from Strathfield to home, and the bus driver revealed halfway through the trip that he didn't actually know where he was going. I considered myself lucky that I was going to Melbourne the next day . . . until I arrived in the middle of the state's worst-ever gas crisis and couldn't switch on the central heating for two days. Life's like that sometimes.

On a cinematic front, I can recommend Wild Things, the Kevin Bacon/Neve Campbell/Matt Dillon Florida trash thriller. An engaging mixture of Dynasty and Sleuth, with lots of gratuitous nudity and alligator shots.
