Rant Of The Day is where I get to mouth off about whatever I feel like for however long I like. Theoretically, I'll update my whinge/opinion piece every weekday; in practice, maybe not so often.
Looking at them, though, I'm reminded of how much the Sesame Street cast has changed over the years. These cards, which are dated 1977 (when I was all of five years old), feature the characters I know and remember: Grover, Bert, Ernie, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Oscar, Herry Monster, the Count, Guy Smiley, Sherlock Hemlock, and Mumford the Magician.
The official Sesame Street site lists the following Muppet characters as part of the regular 1997 cast: Baby Bear, Big Bird, Elmo (spit!), Oscar, Rosita, Telly and Zoe. Supporting cast members are Natasha, Barkley, Bert, Cookie Monster, The Count, Ernie, Grover, Hoots, Ingrid and Humphrey, Prairie Dawn, Sherlock Hemlock, and Alice and Aloysius Snuffleupagus. The times, it seems, are a-changing.
Of course, a major reason behind this change is that the core Muppet team of the 1970's have either moved on to other things or, sadly, died. And I'm sure that in 20 years time people will obsess over Zoe the way I do over Grover. But in an ideal world, it never would have changed. God, I sound like a Woman's Day letter writer, don't I?
