Rant Of The Day is where I get to mouth off about whatever I feel like for however long I like. Theoretically, I'll update my whinge/opinion piece every weekday; in practice, maybe not so often.
Leaving aside my own family crisis issues, this still strikes me as a fundamentally stupid and unfair idea. Why should the ability to reproduce entitle you to a tax break? If anything, it ought to be the other way round; families make much greater use of government resources (such as schools and hospitals). With Howard so committed to user-pays systems in education, telecoms and practically everything else, it's surprising that this one has slipped past him.
Not that I'd really advocate higher tax rates for families on the whole. However, I don't see why I should be, in effect, penalised just because I choose not to contribute to the world population problem. Given that I think differently from Howard on practically every issue, though, I guess I ought to start planning for the higher rates now.i
