Rant Of The Day THIS RANT 15/01/97

Rant Of The Day is where I get to mouth off about whatever I feel like for however long I like. Theoretically, I'll update my whinge/opinion piece every weekday; in practice, maybe not so often.

The great cover-up

It's a horrible feeling when you realise your attitudes are calcifying. This morning, I read in TV Week that among the many singles that will be released in the future, we can look forward to a dance cover of Fischer-Z's 1980 hit 'So Long' from dance act Helena, and a remake of the Human League's 1981 biggie 'Love Action' from Sydney band PVC. Automatically, I dump these in the same category as other recent 80s cover versions (Nicki French's 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart', the remake of ABC's 'The Look Of Love' by some dumb dance band whose name I can't remember, Cut 'N' Move's 'Give It Up', Peter Andre's 'Get Down On It'): they're bound to be crap.

This, more than anything else, emphasises how out of touch with the music scene I am these days. I can remember back when Naked Eyes did their cover version of 'Always Something There To Remind Me', and my mother complained about how it sucked next to Sandi Shaw's version. Yeah right, I thought, what would you know? Fifteen years later, I find myself mouthing the same thoughts.

I know that this always happens: canny managers get their acts to record cover versions, the kids love 'em, anyone who remembers the originals hates them. It sucks when someone stomps on your memories of great music by putting them in a modern setting. But now I'm left wondering how long it will be before I start agreeing with Ray Martin, and am forced to shoot myself.
