Rant Of The Day THIS RANT 19/07/96

Rant Of The Day is where I get to mouth off about whatever I feel like for however long I like. Theoretically, I'll update my whinge/opinion piece every weekday; in practice, maybe not so often.

The guilt of the long distance Web person

There's a theory that publishing on the Web is easier, cheaper and simpler than publishing in other mediums. It's fast and interactive and there's less to go wrong. This is bollocks, basically.

Don't get me wrong -- I love Gusworld with a passion rarely matched, HTML is my God and there's nothing like a bacon and egg roll for breakfast, but when it goes wrong, it goes spectacularly wrong. For the past week, as regulars around here will know, my home PC hasn't been working. I've been forced to update Gusworld from work, which limits the time I can spend on it. Electronic publishing is as dependent on electronics as conventional publishing is on killing trees.

Anyway, as a result of my computer's recalcitrance, several sections of Gusworld have fallen severely behind. Cheese Watch is two weeks behind, Share A Secret Reviewed is one week back and the Music Matters list hasn't been touched in a while. Meanwhile, I'm left with a guilty conscience that would do a Catholic proud.

Why is this? I mean, Gusworld is basically for my own amusement; it doesn't exist to make money and if people enjoy it enough to come back, I'd hope they'd work out that there are times when things get backlogged. It must be my journalistic background; a deadline is a deadline is a deadline.

I'm also probably still feeling guilty after yesterday's shameless rant, for which Spanky The Naughty Little Monkey quite rightly pilloried me. The Are You A Slut? quiz is one thing, but that was something else. I'd purge it from the Archives but then I'd feel guilty for being a revisionist.

Anyway, to make myself feel better, I'm making the following resolutions:

See you all on Monday!
