Rant Of The Day THIS RANT 02/05/1996

Rant Of The Day is where I get to mouth off about whatever I feel like for however long I like. Theoretically, I'll update my whinge/opinion piece every weekday; in practice, maybe not so often.

Not the Ray Martin fan club

Ray Martin wasn't featured on Media Watch this week. He's probably grateful for that, considering his response every other time Stuart Littlemore has discussed A Current Affair with one sardonically raised eyebrow and a clear understanding of journalism firmly to the fore.

Look at Martin's use of the Logies as a forum to defend himself. Last year Martin's basic retort was "he's jealous because he has no hair" (he recycled the idea in The Bulletin last month as well). Leaving aside the desirability of having Ray Martin's hairdo, this is not much of an answer (although Frontline's Mike Moore seemed impressed . . .)

This year, he had a new trick. Post-Logies, he told TV Week: "There is an ongoing criticism of shows that rate or people or programs who get these awards. I thought TV was about being a popular medium."

No doubt it is, Ray, no doubt it is. But journalism is not about being a popular medium. Call your program A Current Affair and the defence of populism is about as good as saying "Hey, I've got hair!". Now if it was called Entertainment Tonight . . .
