Rant Of The Day is where I get to mouth off about whatever I feel like for however long I like. Theoretically, I'll update my whinge/opinion piece every weekday; in practice, maybe not so often.|
THIS RANT 01/11/2000
Dr Goldfoot And The Bikini MachineThe recently released Supremes 4-CD box set (which comes in a somewhat ludicrous velvet package, as you can see) contains a number of rare tracks recorded by the band. One of these goes under the somewhat unexpected title 'Dr Goldfoot And The Bikini Machine'. You might suspect that this was just another sign of psychedelic 60s excess, but in fact it's the theme song to a long-forgotten 1965 movie starring Vincent Price.
By far the most ludicrous moment in this generally ludicrous song comes at the end of the first bridge, when the eternally nasal Diana Ross sings the following lines:
He'd push a button, and just like nothing
While these lyrics are bad enough, what sends this song into the stratosphere is the backing vocals. Immediately after the lines above, the Supremes kick in with a heartfelt 'Whoo!', which seems mildly inappropriate, to say the least. To really appreciate this gag, you have to hear it; by a happy coincidence, the 30 second sample of this song held at CDnow includes precisely this sublime moment. Listen up and try not to laugh.
Just thought I'd share that with you.
