Book 6: Sudden Death

Curiosity can kill you . . .

. . . just ask Lara.

Lara Crandall is determined to write a major news story about steroid use among student athletes for her high school newspaper. But her snooping stirs up trouble when the athletes she's interviewed start to die . . . Lara never figured that investigating steroids could be more deadly than using them. PLOT SUMMARY: Lara Crandall just keeps getting stonewalled when she tries to investigate steroid abuse at Cresswell High, and no wonder. The first person she asks, her childhood friend Billy Owens, turns out to be a major steroid abuser, and the second person she asks, her father Dr Crandall, turns out to be the supplier. The steroid-crazed Evans twins kill hockey star Nick Gliddon, one Evans brother kills the other in a steroid-filled rage, Billy kills Dr Crandall in a sauna during manic steroid deprivation, and only the quick thinking of sports reporter James Horth saves the day. Needless to say, he doesn't take steroids.

MOST AMUSING DEATH: "It was a limb cutter! A glint of red light from the exit sign reflected off the blades as Chuck slowly pulled the steel cable to open the blade.
Before Nick could scream, the blade snapped closed on his neck, severing his head from his body like a twig from a tree."

MOST EMBARRASSING DIALOGUE: "Billy and I have been friends for a long time, and we'll still be friends long after he gets tired of your game and dumps you once and for all."
Kim struggled for an adequate comeback. "You wish!"

UNREALISTIC POLICE BEHAVIOUR: Just general stupidity, especially when it comes to not questioning the hockey team about their possible involvement in Nick's death
